WOC Announces Crazy Plea For Attention..I Mean, “Prayerful Action”

Let’s be honest here. They don’t speak for all Catholic women, merely the professional perpetually aggrieved ones.

Anyway, here’s their rootin’ tootin’ bras a-blazin’ call for action, gleaned from their site:

Greetings!

Please consider joining local WOC Members and allies for a prayerful action to bring attention to the lack of women’s voices at the Papal conclave, and protest the ban on women from all leadership and decision-making positions in the Catholic church.

This vigil is part of an international series of protest vigils in response to the male-only conclave deciding the next Pope. We will raise pink smoke as a witness to the voices of the Catholic church that go unheard. Please consider wearing PINK clothes!

WHEN: Tuesday, March 12th, 7 PM

WHERE: St. Matthew’s Cathedral,  1725 Rhode Island Ave NW Washington, DC

WHY: The male-only College of Cardinals will gather to elect the next Pope in the coming days. We gather to bring worldwide attention to the lack of women’s voices at the conclave, and protest the ban on women from all leadership and decision-making positions in the Catholic church.

A few thoughts:

~ If you show up with a couple of friends at St Matthew’s, you’ll probably double the attendance.

~ “International series of protest vigils” means the one in Washington, and a couple gals will hold a banner in Rome. Thus, international. Cos really now – if they had any number of these prayer vigils scheduled and stocked to the gills with gals, you know for sure they’d be advertising.every.single.one. Time and location, down to the second.

~ Um, hate to break it to these ladies, but there won’t be *any* laity – male or female – at the conclave. Boy, these perpetually aggrieved types sure are bigoted.

~ And I think Mother Mary Assumpta Long from the Dominican Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist would argue that women aren’t banned from *all* leadership and decision-making positions within the Church (they mention this “ban” twice in their flyer, should you forget). Or NETWORK Director Sr Simone Campbell and CHA Pres Sr Carol Keehan, for that matter. Or any other abbess, or female Catholic school principal, or whomever. What they really mean to say – is that they don’t want some guy telling them what to do, especially if it’s not their guy who’s doing the telling.

I’d love it if any Washington DC reader could stop and report on the Pink Floyd Smoke Rising event next Tuesday.

  1. Did you know – or did they know – that in the 1960′s there was a female Cardinal. No lie. She was gorgeous and Italian – Claudia Cardinale. She was in Pink Panther.

  2. I graduated from a college (in 1960) where the president was Sister Mary William, the academic dean was Sister Mary Edward, and the chairman of the Philosophy Dept. was Sister Kevin. In charge of our chapter of PhiBetaKappa was Sister Helen Margaret. If I remember correctly, all of these officials were women. They’re probably laughing their heads off when they’re not praying for wisdom to enter the minds of these goofy girlys.

  3. Another one they forgot is Mother Angelica. She took on Cardinal Mahony in the 90s. & isn’t that what they are calling for? Oh wait, Mother Angelica took him on for his promoting errors asbout the Eucharist that this gang would agree with.
