I think there is something so uncharitable about this picture and legend. I know that to those of us who grew up seeing the show, he will for ever be McGyver. In my country, McGyver would be on in the morning on Saturdays so I would come back from school running just to catch it in time. Nevertheless, we all grow old and most of us grow fatter (slower metabolism). If it is true for most of us it is true for R.D. Anderson. Shouldn’t he also have that privilege without being photographed and ridiculed in such a way? I don’t know, as a fan I understand the shock of seeing him grey haired. Even though I followed him in Stargate SG-1 and I had progressively seen him aging season after season, I still picture McGyver as that young impetuous know it all (literally know it all!). I understand. I just don’t like that he doesn’t get to grow older without people commenting in such a way. No one of us would like to have our ‘decrepiting’ (is that even a word?) body commented so.
I’m with ski with this. Helping him would have been the best thing to do, regardless of who he is, not poking fun. I don’t even think it’s that funny. What this says to me is that if my car were to break down not only wouldn’t I not get help, but I wouldn’t even have my picture taken since I’m just fat, not famous. More good Samaritans and fewer smart @$$es.
Who’s to say he didn’t get help? Maybe the photographer went over afterwards and gave him a paper clip, two thumb tacks, the spring from a ball point pen, and some chewing gum?
While I agree that the “old and fat” comments were over-the-top, the bit about him being unable to fix his car is pretty funny.
Even MacGyver couldn’t fix a modern Audi without a shop manual and a laptop flown in from Ingolstadt. I’m actually a little amazed that, upon pulling the hood release, the car didn’t just sharply respond “Nein!” and deliver a mild electric shock.
(As I recall, these photos were taken while a tow truck was on the way, and RDA was just killing time.)
“clueless and mechanically challenged.” Certainly no more so than the arrogantly stupid anti-second amendment writers of MacGyver, the television show which first brought him to any sort of prominence in that medium.
Doesn’t he have a warranty on that car?
Why must you kill my childhood?

Plus, don’t take a picture and not help the man!
He still has hair. That’s good.

Don’t feel bad – you’ll be old one day too.
One day? I think I’m already there, Ter.

@Teresa Rice,

Better watch it or you might get Patty & Selma Bouvier mad at you: http://simpsons.wikia.com/wiki/MacGyver
PS: This shows the importance of a good scriptwriter & prop man.
Haha! Patty and Selma!
Too much hatred for the aged a/o portly. No room for hate.
